De V-Strom 800 wordt aangedreven door een 776 cc paralleltwin die een fijne balans biedt tussen soepel, controleerbaar vermogen in het gehele toerenbereik. Standaard is de motor gekoppeld aan een Bi-directional Quick Shift Systeem, waarmee trefzeker zowel op- als teruggeschakeld kan worden zonder dat je daarvoor de koppelingshevel hoeft te gebruiken. De bescheiden afmeting van de voorzijde naar de achterzijde maakt een ideale gewichtsverdeling en een optimale framegeometrie mogelijk. Met andere woorden: uitstekend stuurgedrag en wendbaarheid alom. Ook de lichtgewicht constructie van de uniek gevormde draagarm draagt bij aan het rijplezier, terwijl het smalle subframe zeer sterk is en moeiteloos het gewicht van koffers en een passagier kan dragen.
