EICMA 2021: What to expect

Daan van der Wal

8 Dec 2024

Milan is known as the city of fashion... and of motorcycles. The EICMA (Esposizione Internazionale Ciclo Motociclo e Accessori) is traditionally the place where all motorcycle brands present their new models for the next riding season.

Motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the world gather during this week and a half that this event takes place. But it is just all the magnificent stuff presented by motorcycle that makes aficionados head for their annual pilgrimage. Designers and manufacturers of motorcycle apparel, helmets and any motorcycle accessory conceivable will have a place at the event.

The 2020 edition of the EICMA had to be cancelled due to the impact of the Corona virus. The organization feared that with the recent experience of big brands presenting their new models online, there would be relatively few participants at the fair this year. Nothing could be further from the truth; With the exception of a few brands, all major motorcycle manufacturers are giving ‘acte de preseance’ in the North Italian city. The 78th (!) edition of this International Motorcycle Fair will take place from 23 to 29 November 2021. The first two days are reserved for the press and dealers.

The rumors about which new motorcycles we can expect at EICMA 2021 have been going around for months already and the introductions are awaited by fans all over the world. We have collected the most important announcements (and rumors of announcements) of new models of the different motorcycle brands.

New models at EICMA 2021

Aprilia

The Tuareg 660 was recently unveiled already, but Aprilia is very likely to show the Tuareg 660 in ‘the flesh’ at EICMA. This adventure bike is one of three models, based on the successful RS 660 platform. Rumor has it that a fourth model, also based on the 660, will be shown as well. There are also whispers in the grapevine that Aprilia will show a concept of the RS 400. This model bridges the gap between the Italian brand's 125 and 660 series.

Benelli

Benelli is doing well and there is revenue and name growth all around the world. The main key to this success was the TRK 502, an adventure tourer with a good value for money. At EICMA 2021, Benelli will unveil a new bigger brother in the shape of a TRK 800.

Bimota

During the previous EICMA – in 2019 – it was publicly announced that Bimota had been acquired by Kawasaki. At this time the bizarre TESI H2 was presented during the fair. All eyes are on Bimota this year. It's almost certain that Bimota's second Kawasaki-based model — the retro KB4 café racer — will be on display as the final production model. Rumor has it that Bimota will also show a motorcycle based on the new ZX-10R!

BMW Motorrad

Due to the Corona virus, BMW will not officially be present at EICMA this year. Nevertheless, BMW enthusiasts expect that the motorcycle brand from Bavaria will show the R 1300 in some shape or form. The R 1300 should replace the successful R 1250 range (RT, GS and GS Adventure). BMW Motorrad is also expected to present a new and electrically powered machine at the fair.

CFMoto

CFMoto, along with other Chinese brands such as Voge, Zongshen and Zonte, are expected to have a strong presence in Milan with models that are more specifically targeted at the European and American motorcyclists. The motorcycles of the Chinese manufacturer are still unknown to the larger public, but we expect that it will not be very long before this is a thing of the past.

Ducati

Remarkably, Ducati will not be present at EICMA. Five new models will be presented digitally soon. The launch of the Ducati Desert X adventure bike is set. At the time of publishing, it is unclear what Ducati will show exactly, but it is very likely that Ducati will present the new Streetfighter V2 and Multistrada V2.

GASGAS

The Spanish company GASGAS specializes in motocross and enduro motorcycles. It is expected that the brand will present a more conventional model at EICMA, possibly based on the KTM 890 Adventure.

Harley-Davidson

The electric LiveWire has changed from model to a brand. EICMA will probably see the European launch of the renewed LiveWire. We could expect to see the iconic American brand giving a lot of attention to the new Sportster S. This exciting bike has recently been put to the test by our own test team. A review will be published on this blog page very soon.

Honda

EICMA is traditionally the place where Honda shows many new models, and again, the expectations for the 2021 show are high. At the top of the list is the highly anticipated Transalp revival. In addition, the return of the NT model line was also announced with a sturdy sport tourer, based on the 1100cc engine as used in the Africa Twin. It is also expected that a new CBR 1000 RR-R Fireblade could be presented, which was the star of EICMA two years ago.

Husqvarna

The 901 Norden was presented as a concept model at EICMA 2019. The production version is expected either this year or early 2022. In addition, spy recordings suggest that Husqvarna has prepared a replacement or a major update for the famous Vitpilen 401, which will likely be shown at EICMA.

Kawasaki

Kawasaki may unveil three new motorcycles at EICMA. It is expected that both a restyled Kawasaki Versys 650 and the new Kawasaki H2 SX are presented at the fair. Aside from these two touring bikes, Kawasaki could possibly present a replacement for the ZX-6R as well.

KTM

There are rumors that the 1290 Duke GT will be introduced as a successor to the Super Adventure and the Duke R. Aside from that, KTM will show an EVO edition (with more power) of the Super Duke in addition to the 1290 Super Duke R and RR.

Moto Guzzi

Moto Guzzi will present the V100 Mandello at EICMA. This bike was introduced as a celebration for the company's 100th anniversary. In addition, images of a revised V7 cruiser can be found on the Internet. This motorcycle could possibly debut at EICMA.

MV Augusta

MV Agusta has hinted that visitors of EICMA can expect the return of the F4 sport bike. With the announcement of the 'Lucky Explorer' project, two new off-road models have also been announced and are likely to be unveiled at EICMA.

Suzuki

EICMA could be the show where the long-awaited replacement for the SV650 and V-Strom 650 are presented. Aside from that, EICMA might also be the place where successor to the iconic GSX-R1000 will be introduced.

Triumph

Triumph could use EICMA to unveil the revised Triumph Tiger 1200. But the realistic expectation is that the brand will do this online in mid-December. EICMA could also be the stage to show a version of the electric roadster, the TE-1 project. It is also suggested that Triumph will show up with a prototype of a new motorcycle with which the brand wants to focus building lightweight off-road models.

Yamaha

Yamaha could launch the R9 at EICMA and possibly also the new R-123 (possibly called the R2) and a restyling of the R7. The recently unveiled MT-10 will also make its public debut at EICMA.
