The provinces of North Holland and Friesland are connected by the Afsluitdijk. Actually, this dyke is not a dyke but a dam, because the IJsselmeer has never been drained. It is quite an experience to drive over the 90 meters wide and 32 kilometers long road that separates the former Zuiderzee and the Waddenzee.

In 1781, Eise Eisinga built the oldest working planetarium in the world. He did this in seven years in his parental home in Franeker. Today, Eise Eisinga's house is a museum and a national monument. You can visit the museum with the planetarium's impressive wheelwork.

In Harlingen, the boats of Rederij Doeksen leave for Vlieland and Terschelling. But Harlingen is also the main seaport of Friesland. From the port you have beautiful views of the special Wadden Sea, but you can also take a nice stroll along stores and terraces.

The Friesche Motorclub from Leeuwarden was founded in 1914 and is one of the oldest motorcycle clubs in our country. Every year, they organize the Eleven Cities Tour for motorcycles on the Saturday before Whitsuntide. They have been doing so for more than eighty years! With this relatively short route (88 kilometers) you'll get to know the variety of landscapes in Friesland. From Franeker in the north of the province, you ride through small roads, unique Frisian villages to the heart of the Frisian lake district. A route with many curves.

This 245-kilometer route takes you past the most beautiful landscapes of Friesland. The tour takes you from Leeuwarden along the Wadden Sea and the borders with the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe via the lakes to Sneek.

With this route of 241 km you'll get to know the east of the province. You start at Drachten and drive north to the Wadden Sea. Here lies the National Park Lauwersmeer with its unique nature. Along the border with Groningen you drive to the forested south of Friesland and then back to Drachten.

Hotel Galamadammen in Koudum is perhaps one of the most beautifully situated hotels in Friesland. The restaurant has a beautiful terrace on the water where you can enjoy a snack or a drink while watching the ships arrive and depart.

Pavilion Driewegsluis is located near Nijetrijne in the south of the province. From the terrace you have a view over nature reserve the Rottige Meente.
