History of Royal Enfield motorcycles

Royal Enfield is a historic British motorcycle brand. Like many other motorcycle brands, Royal Enfield began as a bicycle factory. In 1901, the Enfield Cycle Co. presented a motorcycle with a 211 cc engine. That block sat above the front wheel and drove the rear wheel via a long, crossed belt. During the 1st World War, Royal Enfield made sidepan combinations exclusively for the military. In the 1930s, Enfield made 350 and 500cc singles. These ''bullets'' were specially tuned and were real sports bikes. After the Second World War (during which mainly army models were made) new models were developed that built on the Bullets from the 30s. There were also fat twins built like the 500 Twin and the 700cc Meteor. The 750cc Interceptor was the last model built by Royal Enfield in 1963, as the brand went bankrupt in 1970.

Enfield India

Since 1999, the Royal Enfield brand name may again be used by the factory in India where modern classics are built new under the Royal Enfield name. At first only for the local market because only 4% of the Enfield are exported from India. In 2015, Royal Enfield North America is founded. From the headquarters in Milwaukee, Royal Enfields are sold to American motorcyclists. In 2019, the Royal Enfield Interceptor, Continental, Himalayan, Bullet replica and Classic are sold in the Benelux.
